FACIAL SURGERY
BLEPHAROPLASTY
Over time skin loses its elasticity and muscles slacken. For the eyelids this results in an accumulation of loose skin which collects as folds in the upper eyelids and forms deepening creases in the lower lids. At the same time there is slackening of the muscle beneath the skin allowing the fat, which cushions the eyes in their sockets, to protrude forward and give the appearance of bagginess. In some families there is an inherited tendency for bags to develop during early adulthood before any skin changes.
The problem often seems worse in the morning, particularly with prolonged stress and lack of sleep. Drooping of the eyelids is also an effect of the ageing process and aggravates the accumulation of the skin in the upper eyelids. Sometimes so much skin accumulates in the upper lids that it hangs over the eyelashes to obstruct vision.
What can be done?
Blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that removes the surplus skin and protruding fat to produce a more alert appearance and reduces the morning swelling.
You may also benefit by combining blepharoplasty with other plastic surgery procedures such as a brow lift. The Consultant Plastic Surgeon of your choice at Prince Court Medical Centre will discuss this option with you during consultation.
Who is a candidate for blepharoplasty?
People who have a family problem of bags beneath the eyes may well undergo blepharoplasty surgery in their twenties. Ageing effects of the skin are apparent earlier in the eyelids than elsewhere and blepharoplasty can be carried out from the age of 35.
How long do you need to be hospitalised?
Eye lift procedure normally performed as a day case.
Recuperation
Whilst a Blepharoplasty is usually considered a reasonably minor procedure, the area operated upon is often quite tender and bruised for a week following surgery and the actual eye area can become sensitive and dry. Analgesic tablets are always provided for any discomfort, and usually an antibiotic/anti-inflammatory cream. Patients are encouraged to stay as mobile and upright as possible during their early recovery stage to help reduce any swelling or bruising.
Patients are especially asked to avoid direct sunbathing on the eye area for at least twelve months following surgery.
Patients will also be advised to take a specific amount of recovery time away from work, dependent on the type of job they perform, but it is usual to take around a week off to rest and recover.

BROW LIFT SURGERY
As part of the ageing process skin progressively loses its elasticity and muscles tend to slacken. The stresses of daily life, effects of gravity and exposure to sun can be seen on the face. The rate at which this happens varies from one person to another and is probably determined by genes. Many people feel frustrated that the face they see in the mirror is not the one they feel should be there. Substantial weight loss can produce similar changes in facial appearance to those of the ageing process.
What can be done?
A brow lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure to remove excess fatty tissue and skin from the forehead resulting in a firmer and less wrinkled brow and forehead. Different techniques are available to achieve a brow lift for example a minimally invasive procedure using a thread-lift technique is possible. A special implant - Endotine may also be used to achieve a brow lift. The Consultant Plastic Surgeon of your choice at Prince Court Medical Centre will explain these to you and discuss which brow lift technique would be suitable for you.
How long does a brow lift last?
The effects of a brow lift are permanent but may be reduced with age or if you put on weight.
Who is a candidate for brow lift?
If your eyebrows have begun to sag and your forehead to wrinkle you may benefit from a brow lift.
How long do you need to be hospitalised?
After Brow lift procedure you need to stay about 1 – 2 days for observation.
Recuperation
Following a Brow Lift incision areas are often tender for several weeks following surgery. Analgesic tablets are always provided for any discomfort and patients are encouraged to stay as upright as possible during their early recovery stage and to use cold compresses to help diminish residual swelling.
Most surgeons firmly bandage the brow area for the first 48 hours following surgery to minimise the development of swelling and to help reduce discomfort. Following the removal of bandaging, patients are advised to gently shower and wash their hair on a daily basis and to keep their surgical wounds as clean as possible.
Patients will also be advised to take a specific amount of recovery time away from work, dependent on the type of job they perform, but it is usual to take a week to a fortnight off to rest and recover.

EAR SURGERY, PINNAPLASTY OR OTOPLASTY (SETTING BACK PROMINENT EARS)
Prominent ears often lack a normal fold and sometimes one ear is more prominent than the other. People with prominent ears are sometimes teased, particularly during their school years, and this can lead to a loss of self confidence.
What can be done?
Pinnaplasty or Otoplasty ear surgery is a plastic surgery operation which adjusts the shape of the cartilage within the ear to create the missing folds and to allow the ear to lie closer to the side of the head. The plastic surgery operation is carried out from behind the ears so a small scar is left close to the groove between the ear and the sides of the head. This plastic surgery procedure can be carried out under a local anaesthetic but in the young a general anaesthetic is usually required. Where the lobe of the ear is especially large a small procedure to reduce its size may also be required.
Who is a candidate?
This plastic surgery operation is most often done during childhood but it is best when the patient is 5 years old or more as until then the cartilage is very floppy and does not hold the stitches well. It is recommended that although parents may feel their child’s ears should be corrected to avoid teasing and stigmatisation it is best to wait until the child recognises the problem and wants to have the ears corrected. Children are generally more co-operative and happy with the outcome when they fully understand why the plastic surgery is taking place. Pinnaplasty is also performed during the teenage years and in adult life, when either a local or general anaesthetic can be used.
How long do you need to be hospitalised?
Ear Setback procedure is normally performed as a day case.
Recuperation
Following Ear Correction Surgery incision areas are often tender for several weeks. Analgesic tablets are always provided for any discomfort and patients are encouraged to stay as upright as possible during their early recovery stage. However, much of the post-operative discomfort tends to diminish rapidly after the head bandage and any sutures are removed. Following the removal of the head bandaging, patients are advised to gently shower and wash their hair on a daily basis and to keep their healing wounds as clean as possible.
Patients will also be advised to take a specific amount of recovery time away from work, dependent on the type of job they perform, but it is usual to take around a week off to rest and recover.

FACE LIFT SURGERY
A facelift procedure is a specialist cosmetic surgery procedure performed to overcome the adverse effects of ageing, gravity and sun exposure on the face and jowl area.
This procedure can be performed singularly or in combination with other procedures, such as brow lift surgery or blepharoplasty (eye bag removal procedures).
The ultimate objective is for the surgeon to create a natural, youthful, fresh facial and jowl appearance by removing slack skin, tightening up loose facial muscle and removing unwanted fatty deposits.
Who will benefit from Facelift surgery?
How is a Facelift performed?
A facelift procedure involves the surgical refining of ageing facial features by placing an incision above the hair line at the temple region, which extends down in front or just inside the cartilage at the front of the ear, and then runs behind the earlobe and up into the hair line on the lower scalp area.
These incisions allow the surgeon access to the facial muscle and its fibrous attachments, which are sutured (stitched) tightly in front and behind the ear, to create a firm sling under the chin and around the jowl area. Slack skin is then precisely and meticulously removed, and if necessary, unwanted fat can also be removed from under the chin area with a minor liposuction technique. The remaining skin is then re-draped over the newly defined features and carefully sutured back into place with absorbable stitches.
How long do you need to be hospitalised?
This procedure is usually performed under general anaesthetic and after Full Facelift procedure you need to stay about 2 – 4 days for observation.
Recuperation
Following a facelift procedure, incision areas are often quite tender for several weeks after surgery. Analgesic tablets are always provided for any discomfort and patients are encouraged to stay as upright as possible during their early recovery stage and to use cold compresses to help diminish residual swelling.
Every surgeon's facelift technique can differ slightly and facelift wounds can be closed with clips or fine sutures, which are normally removed 7 - 14 days following surgery. Most surgeons firmly bandage the face and jaw area for the first 48 hours following surgery to minimise the development of swelling and to help reduce facial discomfort.
Patients will also be advised to take a specific amount of recovery time away from work, dependent on the type of job they perform, but it is usual to take a least a fortnight off to rest and recover.

MINI FACELIFT SURGERY
The mini facelift, which is also know as a short scar facelift or an S lift, is a cosmetic procedure that tightens the skin and soft tissues in a person's face. By repositioning and tightening the skin, the patient is able to enjoy a more youthful appearance. Although similar to the traditional facelift, the mini facelift utilizes slightly different techniques in order to minimize the amount of scarring that develops.
The result of a mini facelift
Although the procedure reduces the number of incisions made, the mini facelift can successfully reduce the amount of drooping and sagging of the skin. In addition, it provides a shorter recovery time and is less costly than a traditional facelift. Although the procedure may be performed by itself, many patients also choose to undergo liposuction or other facial cosmetic surgery procedures at the same time. The Consultant Plastic Surgeon of your choice at Prince Court Medical Centre will discuss this option with you during consultation. In most cases, the entire procedure takes one to two hours to complete.
Who is a candidate for a facelift?
As long as you are in good health and are realistic about what this procedure can achieve then you may be suitable for facelift surgery.
How long do you need to be hospitalised?
After Mini Facelift procedure you need to stay about 2 – 4 days for observation.
Recuperation
Following a facelift procedure, incision areas are often quite tender for several weeks after surgery. Analgesic tablets are always provided for any discomfort and patients are encouraged to stay as upright as possible during their early recovery stage and to use cold compresses to help diminish residual swelling.
Patients will also be advised to take a specific amount of recovery time away from work, dependent on the type of job they perform, but it is usual to take a least a fortnight off to rest and recover.

RHINOPLASTY
The nose is the central feature of the face and many people are self-conscious if they regard their nose as too big, too small or having some other feature which they dislike. The characteristics of the nose are inherited and develop during adolescent years. Development continues until the age of 16 and it is, therefore, unwise to operate before this age.
Rhinoplasty surgery to reshape the nose is a common plastic surgery procedure. It can increase or decrease the size of the nose. The shape of the tip, the bridge and also the nostrils can be changed, as can the angle between the nose and the upper lip. Sometimes breathing difficulties can be corrected at the same time.
How is this done?
A plastic surgery operation called Rhinoplasty reduces the size of the framework of the nose over which skin is draped. The skin itself is not touched.
This plastic surgical procedure effectively narrows the width of the nose. If it is necessary to narrow the nostrils this can also be done. It is also possible to shorten the nose and to slim down a bulky tip by reducing the amount of cartilage which shapes the end of the nose.
If you have some difficulty breathing through your nose it may be possible to improve this at the same time.
Sometimes the size of the nose as a feature of the face is influenced by the proportions of the other features, such as the chin and the cheek bones, and to ‘balance’ the appearance of the face it may be advisable to alter these features as well, whether at the same time as the rhinoplasty, or during a separate operation.
What are the limitations?
The objective of a rhinoplasty is to make your nose look right to your eyes so that you lose your self-consciousness about it. It is, therefore, most important that you are clear in your mind what it is you dislike about the appearance of your nose and that you are able to explain this to the consultant surgeon. He will then be able to tell you what is surgically possible and what is not.
If you are middle aged, or if you have a very large nose, there may be a limit to the amount of reduction that can be achieved to the size of your nose by this plastic surgery.
If your nose is bent from previous injury, it may not be possible to make it perfectly straight. Large nostrils can be difficult to reduce.
Recuperation
Whilst a Rhinoplasty is usually considered a reasonably pain free procedure, the operated area is often quite tender for several months following surgery. Analgesic tablets (are always provided for any discomfort and patients are encouraged to stay as upright as possible during their early recovery stage to help diminish residual swelling and bruising.
Patients will also be advised to take a specific amount of recovery time away from work dependent on the type of job they perform, but it is usual to take at least a week to rest and recover .
