BREAST SURGERY
BREAST AUGMENTATION & IMPLANT
The size of a woman’s breasts are genetically determined. Once developed, the breasts may fluctuate in size in response to changes in weight, pregnancy and breast feeding. Most women have breasts of slightly different sizes, but occasionally a very marked difference may develop between the breasts. Breast augmentation surgery will enable you to change the size of your breasts
Breast augmentation can be performed by placing an implant either behind the breast tissue or behind the muscle on which the breast lies. The breast implants used in breast augmentation are usually inserted through incisions underneath the breasts, around the areola or in the armpit.
The options for breast augmentation will be discussed at your consultation with the Consultant Plastic Surgeon.
Breast augmentation surgery is performed with a general anaesthetic and you will need to be admitted for a few night stay in the hospital.
Breast implants used in breast augmentation
A breast implant used in breast augmentation is made of an outer layer of silicone and may be filled with silicone gel or salt water. Some breast implants used in breast augmentation are round and others are shaped. Either breast implant can give excellent results. The manufacturer’s life expectancy of breast implants is 10 or more years, although breast implants used in breast augmentation can stay in without problems for much longer.
Many studies have been carried out to establish whether silicone breast implants used in breast augmentation cause certain diseases. At present there is no evidence to suggest that silicone breast implants are associated with an increased incidence of breast cancer. There is also no evidence to suggest that these breast implants cause autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
How long do you need to be hospitalised?
After Breast Augmentation procedure you need to stay about 2 – 4 days for observation.
Recuperation
Most women experience some discomfort following Breast Enlargement surgery and take analgesic tablets for up to one week following surgery. It is important to allow for a natural period of healing to take place and for those who lead busy lives to abstain from strenuous activity or any form of lifting for six weeks following surgery.
Initially, breasts will be firm and swollen and they will take at least six weeks to soften to a more natural appearance and feel. Breast swelling will settle down completely after several months.
Patients will always be advised to take a specific amount of recovery time away from work, dependent on the type of work they perform, but it is usual to take 7 to 14 days away from work to rest and recover following this type of procedure.

MASTOPEXY (UP-LIFTING OF DROOPY BREASTS)
Droopiness of the breast is a common problem with motherhood, breast feeding and the force of gravity taking their toll. The effects of pregnancy and distension of the breasts with milk causes the fibrous bands which support the breasts in their youthful shape to break down and the skin to stretch. With the subsequent shrinking the unsupported breasts settle into the stretched skin and gravity pulls them down. Putting on weight and then losing it can have the same effect. So too does the ageing process.
What can be done?
It is possible to reshape the breast into one which looks more youthful and feels firmer. This plastic surgery operation is called a Mastopexy. Excess skin is removed from the breast; the breast itself is remodelled into a tighter cone and the nipples are repositioned so that they lie at the appropriate level.
Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple). If the breasts are too small as well as droopy, their size can be increased during the operation by performing a breast augmenttaion at the same time using silicone breast implants underneath the tightened breasts. The results may not last as long with heavy breasts.
Who is a candidate?
Many women seek mastopexy when their families are complete so if you are planning to have further children it may be a good idea to postpone this plastic surgery operation. Although there are no risks for future pregnancy, and mastopexy does not usually interfere with breast feeding, pregnancy is likely to stretch the breasts again and reduce the effectiveness of the procedure. The Consultant Plasic Surgeon will discuss this with you at your consultation.
How long do you need to be hospitalised?
After Breast Lift procedure you need to stay about 2 – 4 days for observation.
Recuperation
Once a patient is fully recovered from the effects of anaesthetic they are normally quickly encouraged to be as mobile as possible to avoid complications such as Deep Vein Thrombosis. Following a progressive improvement of mobility and pain control, patients are normally discharged home 1-2 days after surgery.
Whilst the operation of Breast Uplift is a relatively major procedure, the operated area is usually quite numb and relatively pain free following surgery. However, analgesic tablets are provided for any discomfort that may be experienced.
Patients will be advised to take a specific amount of recovery time away from work, dependent on the type of job they perform, but it is usual to take around a fortnight off and to refrain from any strenuous upper body exercise for at least 6 weeks following surgery.

BREAST REDUCTION
A Breast Reduction procedure can help women of all ages to overcome the discomfort caused by large and heavy pendulous breasts. The procedure involves the surgical removal of breast fat, glandular tissue and skin, under general anaesthetic.
The objective of Breast Reduction surgery is to produce a smaller, lighter, improved breast shape, complementary and proportionate to the rest of an individual's figure with a minimum of scarring.
This procedure is performed within a broad age range of women who wish to reduce their breast size and shape for the following reasons:
How is a Breast Reduction procedure performed?
A Breast Reduction procedure involves the surgical reduction of breast tissue and the surgical restoration of contour through a series of carefully planned and measured excisions. This restoration normally involves the removal of a reasonably large volume of breast tissue and the relocation of the nipple and surrounding skin back into the centre of the newly created breast shape. Patients are fully anaesthetised throughout their procedure, which can take an average of 2 - 2 ½ hours to perform.
