ARMLIFT SURGERY

BRACHIOPLASTY

Arm Lift, or Brachioplasty as it is technically known, is a specialist cosmetic surgery procedure performed to permanently remove excess fat and skin from the upper arm to improve its cosmetic contour and firmness.

Who will benefit from an Arm Lift procedure?

  • Men and women who have excessive loose skin and flabby fat on their arms that will not respond to normal diet and exercise.
  • Women and men who loose skin elasticity following significant weight gain or weight loss, especially related to Gastric Bypass surgery or pregnancy.

Although techniques for Arm Lift surgery vary slightly between surgeons, a standard procedure typically involves liposuction to remove surplus fat and skin tailoring surgery to tighten loose skin.
Liposuction removes surplus fat through a narrow suction devise known as a cannula (please see our separate patient fact sheet detailing liposuction in full detail). The skin tightening part of the procedure is carried out by excising a slim oval shaped portion of skin from the underside of each arm and sewing the remaining skin edges together to form a tighter fit around the slimmed down arm shape.

Following surgery the incision wounds are covered with an absorbent dressing and each arm supported with a firm elastic compression garment, which will help control swelling and bruising as the new scars heal. It is common for two or more surgical drains to be left in place for a day following surgery to drain away any early post-operative discharge.

How long do you need to be hospitalised?

The arm lift procedure is performed under general aesthetic and normally takes about two hours to complete. Recovery post brachioplasty takes one to two weeks. Swelling is generally mild to moderate, and peaks at 2 to 3 days. Therefore you are advised to remain for observation between 2 to 4 days.

Recuperation

An Arm Lift is classified as major surgery and the operated area is usually tender, swollen, tight and uncomfortable for several weeks following surgery. Analgesic tablets are always provided for any discomfort and patients are encouraged to stay as gently mobile as possible during their early recovery stage to help improve their circulation and avoid post-operative complications such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) from developing.

While each person's recovery is unique, bruising and swelling after an arm lift generally lasts 1 to 2 weeks. You'll probably be wise to able to return to work in a week, and resume exercise within 2 weeks. Strenuous workouts and contact sports can be engaged in after about four weeks.
